Croatia for first-timers: things to know before you go
A few things first-time visitors to Croatia almost always wish they'd known before arriving. None of them are dealbreakers — but they'll smooth the trip.
The beaches are pebble, not sand
Most Croatian beaches are pebble or rock, which is exactly why the water is so clear. Pack water shoes and you'll thank yourself.
Book ferries and rooms ahead in summer
Car ferries and popular catamarans sell out in July and August — reserve early. See getting around Croatia.
It's euros now
Croatia joined the euro in 2023, so no more kuna. Cards are widely accepted; keep a little cash for small konobas and markets. More in money & tipping.
A few more
Tap water is safe to drink. Expect a small nightly tourist tax added to accommodation. Konoba service is unhurried — that's the culture, not bad service. Validate bus tickets, carry sun cover, and don't try to drive into walled old towns. And slow down: distances look short but island-hopping takes time.
Then pick when to go — see the best time to visit.
