Omiš: pirates, a river canyon, and the home of klapa
Omiš has the most dramatic setting of any town on the central coast: the Cetina river bursts out of a sheer canyon straight into the sea, with stone houses crammed onto the narrow shelf between cliff and water. For three centuries this was a pirates' lair — and the town has been trading on adventure ever since.
The pirate town
In the 12th and 13th centuries the Omiš corsairs ran the Adriatic from this hidden river mouth, fast and feared enough to extract tolls from Venice itself. The story is everywhere today, and each summer the town stages a Pirate Battle (Gusarska bitka) — a full reenactment with ships and fireworks in the harbour.
The fortresses
Two forts guard the town. Mirabella (Peovica) rises right above the old core — a short, steep climb for a knockout view over the rooftops and river mouth. Higher up, the larger Starigrad (Fortica) fortress crowns the ridge, a more serious hike with a panorama over the whole coast and islands. See more in our castles & fortresses guide.
The Cetina canyon
The river behind the town is the adventure. Go rafting or ziplining across the gorge, kayak the calm lower stretch, or drive up to Radmanove Mlinice — old mills turned riverside restaurant — for lunch under the cliffs. Upstream lies the tall Gubavica waterfall. More on the river in our rivers of Dalmatia guide.
The home of klapa
Omiš is the spiritual home of klapa — the UNESCO-listed Dalmatian a-cappella harmony singing — and hosts the long-running Festival of Dalmatian Klapa each summer. Catching a concert in the old town on a warm evening is the most Dalmatian thing you can do here.
