Split vs Zadar: which to base yourself in

6 June 2026 · 6 min read

Both are Dalmatian coastal hubs with Roman roots, ferries to the islands and plenty of life — but they have different characters. Here's how to choose.

Choose Split for…

Buzz, connections and history. Split is bigger and livelier, built inside Diocletian's Roman palace, and it's the main ferry hub for the islands — the natural base if you want to island-hop. See island hopping from Split.

Choose Zadar for…

A calmer, cheaper, more local feel. Zadar has a gorgeous compact old town, the famous Sea Organ sunset, and easier access to Krka and the Kornati. Fewer crowds than Split, and gentler on the wallet.

The verdict

First trip and want to see the islands? Split. Returning, travelling slower, or chasing that sunset? Zadar. Many people do both — they're a couple of hours apart by bus. Compare itineraries: Split in 3 days and Zadar in 2 days.
