Oysters of Ston & the Pelješac peninsula
In the sheltered channel of Mali Ston, where fresh water meets the sea, grows one of the Adriatic's great delicacies — the European flat oyster, eaten straight from the water with nothing but a squeeze of lemon. It's a short, worthwhile trip up the coast from Dubrovnik.
The oysters & mussels
The Ostrea edulis flat oyster has been farmed here since Roman times and is prized for its clean, mineral taste. Alongside it come plump mussels, often served na buzaru — in white wine, garlic and parsley. Many farms will shuck them for you on a pontoon over the water.
Ston itself
The twin towns of Ston and Mali Ston are worth the trip beyond the seafood: the great walls of Ston, sometimes called the European Great Wall, climb the hill for over five kilometres, and the old salt pans still work as they have for centuries.
Pair it with wine
You're on the doorstep of the Pelješac peninsula, home of the big red Plavac Mali from Dingač and Postup — see our wines of Dalmatia guide.
