Split vs Dubrovnik: which should you base in?

28 May 2026 · 6 min read

They are the two cities most people choose between for a Croatian coast trip — and they could hardly be more different. Here is how Split and Dubrovnik actually compare on the things that decide a trip.

The one-line answer

For most travellers — especially anyone staying a while, watching the budget, or planning day trips — Split is the better base. Dubrovnik is breathtaking and worth seeing, but it works best as a shorter, more special stop than a home base.

Atmosphere

Split is a real, lived-in city built around (and inside) the Roman walls of Diocletian’s Palace. People actually live and work in the old town, so it has energy year-round. Dubrovnik’s walled old town is smaller, more perfectly preserved and genuinely stunning — but it can feel like an open-air museum, especially when cruise ships are in.

Crowds

Both get busy in peak summer, but Dubrovnik’s compact old town concentrates the crowds intensely — midday in August can be a crush. Split’s larger footprint absorbs visitors more comfortably. In both, early mornings and the shoulder season are the secret to enjoying them.

Cost

This is the big one. Dubrovnik is one of the most expensive places in Croatia — accommodation in particular. Split is noticeably more affordable, and you can do far better still in nearby Zadar, Trogir or Rijeka. If budget matters, Split wins clearly.

Getting around & day trips

Split is Dalmatia’s transport hub: the main ferry port for the islands, good bus connections and a busy airport nearby. From here you can reach Hvar, Brač, Vis and more easily. Dubrovnik sits in the far south, more isolated, with fewer onward connections — lovely, but less practical as a launchpad.

So, which one?

  • Base in Split if you want value, energy, island day trips, or a longer / remote-work stay.
  • Visit Dubrovnik for a few nights of unmatched walled-city beauty — ideally outside peak midday and peak season.
  • Best of both: base in Split, and take a separate short trip south to Dubrovnik.
