The best islands to visit from Split
One of the best things about basing yourself in Split is the islands: several of the Adriatic’s finest are a short ferry or catamaran ride from the city port. Here is what each is actually like, so you can pick the right one for your trip.
Hvar — glamour & nightlife
The most famous of the group: lavender fields, a pretty Venetian harbour town, beach clubs and a buzzy nightlife scene. Hvar Town gets busy and pricey in summer, but the island is bigger and quieter than its reputation — and gorgeous in the shoulder season. Stay over rather than day-tripping to see it properly; browse our boutique hotels in Hvar.
Brač — beaches & the closest hop
The nearest big island to Split and home to Zlatni Rat, the famous shifting-pebble beach at Bol. Brač is more laid-back and family-friendly than Hvar, with good swimming and a shorter ferry ride — an easy day trip or a relaxed few nights.
Vis — remote & unspoilt
The farthest out and the most unspoilt, having been closed to tourists for decades as a military island. Vis rewards the extra travel time with quiet coves, excellent food and a slower pace. Best for travellers who want nature and authenticity over nightlife — and ideally an overnight stay given the distance.
Šolta — the local secret
The closest island of all and the least touristy. Šolta is where many Split locals keep summer houses — olive groves, small fishing villages and swimming spots without the crowds. Perfect for a quiet day on the water close to the city.
Practical notes
- Ferries and catamarans leave from Split’s main port, walkable from the old town.
- Services are most frequent in summer; check timetables carefully in the shoulder and winter months.
- Catamarans (foot passengers) are faster; car ferries are slower but let you bring a vehicle.
- For Hvar and Vis especially, an overnight stay beats a rushed day trip.
